ONALASKA — Brad Plueger’s first victory as the Tomah High School boys basketball coach was a memorable one.

The Timberwolves took the lead with less than 15 seconds left and then watched a buzzer-beater pop out of the hoop for a 55-54 MVC victory over Onalaska on Friday.

Tomah (1-2, 1-0) trailed by as many as nine points in the second half, but a basket by Jason Herricks put it in front for good on its last possession. The Hilltoppers (1-3, 0-1), who had beaten Tomah in six straight meetings, worked the ball to Johnny Liu in the lane for a shot at the winning basket, but the shot didn’t fall.

“After Jason’s basket, they came down the court fast,” said Plueger, whose team won its MVC opener for the first time since the 2004-05 season and hosts Adams-Friendship in its home opener Tuesday. “We had fouls to give, so we used three and then called a timeout to set up our defense. (Liu) got in the lane and shot it, but it didn’t go.”

Senior Rhett Monroe and Herricks led Tomah with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Onalaska got 18 points apiece from Liu and freshman Nick Arenz.
