ONALASKA — After three one-point losses and another by four, the Onalaska High School boys basketball team may be turning the corner.

At least it did on Thursday night.

Thanks to a balanced scoring attack and some solid free-throw shooting, the Hilltoppers defeated Sparta 48-38 in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at John Shelton Court. The Hilltoppers, under first-year coach Craig Kowal, have dropped one-point games to Logan, Tomah and La Crescent.

This time, Onalaska wasn’t going to be denied as it turned in a strong second-half performance. The Hilltoppers, who led

20-19 at the half, outscored the Spartans 28-19 in the second half, thanks in part to Tyler Adams. Adams scored nine of his team-high 11 points in the second half. Michael Price did his part, too, adding 10 points for the Hilltoppers (3-6, 1-2).

Onalaska did some damage from the foul line, sinking 10 of 17 attempts in the fourth quarter. Nick Klos was

4-for-4 from the line in the fourth, while Adams was 3-for-4.

Sparta’s Jordan Laufenberg led all scorers with 18 points. The Spartans fell to 3-5, 1-3 in the MVC.
