Hilltoppers get huge win over Central

Winning basketball, Onalaska High School boys basketball coach Craig Kowal said, is a three-step process.

You won’t win if you can’t compete, so that’s an obvious step No. 1. Out of the Hilltoppers’ first nine games, seven were decided by 10 points or less.

Kowal also believes you won’t win games unless you’ve experienced difficult situations.

Three of Onalaska’s six losses were by one point, so it also had that step covered.

That set up Monday night’s game against Central, during which the Hilltoppers successfully completed the third step of being able to finish games.

Onalaska came back from a slow start to overwhelm the Red Raiders 56-43 and knock them from the ranks of the MVC unbeaten.

“We showed tonight that we can finish and completed the process,” Kowal said. “We fell behind, we battled back, and we answered every little spurt they put together.”

Although Central (7-2, 3-1) built a 10-2 lead, it fell behind for good by halftime against a team that controlled every phase of the final three quarters.

The Hilltoppers (4-6, 2-2) turned the third quarter into a 16-3 run and used 21 points from Michael Price and a double-double from Nick Arenz (15 points, 11 rebounds) to collect their biggest victory of the season.

“We’re finally figuring out how to win and close out games,” said Onalaska junior Tyler Adams, the leader in a defensive effort that held Central’s Ryan Ledvina to a season-low 12 points. “It’s great for us to win one like this.”

The Hilltoppers have now won two straight games and three of their last four heading into Friday night’s game at Aquinas.

“In all the things we wanted to do, they did them better than us,” said Central coach Todd Fergot, whose team is now tied with Aquinas and Logan for the MVC lead. “We were flat tonight, and I don’t really know why.”
